ARNIS – Maharlika Martial Art – Spirit

with Kristoffer Young

Class Description

What is Arnis?

Also known as Kali, Escrima, or simply Filipino Martial Arts is a striking-based system of weapons-based combat that blends empty hands, knees, elbows, headbutts, and joint locks to create a well-rounded culturally-based system of self-defense. Its focus is on survival, artifice, and dirty fighting to ensure practitioners are able to get out of dangerous situations in one piece. Battle-tested through hundreds of years of resisting oppression from Chief Lapu-Lapu’s victory against Ferdinand Magellan on the shores of Mactan, Cebu, Gabriela Silang’s campaign for Ilocano independence from Spanish colonizers in 1763, Andres Bonifacio and the Philippine Revolution, and all the way to guerilla warriors like Colonel Yay Panlilio and Captain Nieves Fernandez- women who struck fear in the hearts of Japanese soldiers in the jungles of World War 2.

What are we teaching?

What makes Arnis unique from other survival systems is its emphasis on weapons first. We train with rattan canes, with techniques and moves that translate from stick fighting, to bladework, to empty-hand fighting- eventually learning how to disarm and use your opponent’s weapons against them. We will go over self-defense techniques and takedowns from the lens of Filipino Martial Arts, with an emphasis on building confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to be calm in stressful situations through drills, games, competition and heartful meditation.

What can students expect?

70mins of fun, culturally-sensitive and trauma-informed self-defense and martial arts training. We begin with a warmup and stretching before going into a technique of the week, gradually building up students’ warrior mentality through safe but challenging high-intensity interval training. Our Arnis covers training that is mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional: giving our practitioners the ability to fall safely, get up quickly, and eventually even deal with multiple attackers. Each class is unique, but will continue building on skills shared every week to unlock each practitioner’s inner warrior. Please bring an extra shirt (you will sweat!), a bottle of water, and perhaps a towel to dry off between drills. Wearing clothing that is easy to move in and non-marking shoes is a must! You are also welcome to train barefoot.
