FORMATIVE MOTION SPACE FUNDRAISER

A safe space to breathe, feel, move, connect—and just be.

StartingĀ August 22, this weekly offering invites those impacted by theĀ Lapu Lapu Festival tragedyĀ to gather in healing and solidarity. These trauma-informed sessions are designed to support theĀ rehabilitation of victims and affected community members—through breath, gentle movement, embodied practices, and community care.

Each session begins with a healing circle and ends with fellowship and the sharing of Filipino snacks—honoring tradition, culture, and connection.

šŸ½ Stay for Filipino snacks + community connection

Offered in partnership with @formativemotionsociety, @kapwastrong, @unitedway_bc @mabuhayhouse,, and other community collaborators.

This is an invitation to begin again—with care, hope, and collective healing.

Bernadette Pacana, the yoga therapist facilitating the series, will promote the sessions through her social media platforms and through Local Health Integrative Clinic, as was done for the initial Paglaum session. Formative Motion Society and Mabuhay House will also support outreach efforts to ensure the series reaches those most impacted by the tragedy. Together, these partners will actively engage the Filipino-Canadian community, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of mutual support.
With the combined reach of these organizations, we aim to make the series widely accessible and impactful, contributing meaningfully to the ongoing rehabilitation and healing of the victims of the Lapu Lapu Festival tragedy. All communications and promotional materials will be provided in English, Tagalog, and Cebuano to ensure accessibility and cultural resonance.

Paglaum Cultural and Historical Context

Paglaum is the Cebuano word for ā€œhopeā€ and an important touchstone in times of grief.
Paglaum is grounded in the language and culture of Cebu in the Philippines.

Lapu Lapu is a revered historical figure in the Philippines and namesake of the Vancouver festival where the tragedy occurred. Lapu Lapu was a Datu or Indigenous chieftain from Mactan in the southern Philippine province of Cebu. Lapu Lapu symbolizes courage, resistance, strength and the spirit of independence from colonial rule. Lapu Lapu brought hope to his people and remains a symbol of hope to Filipinos across the diaspora.

Professional Profile

Bernadette Pacana is a yoga therapist, teacher trainer, plant-based holistic nutritionist, Reiki practitioner, and wellness coach who offers a deeply integrative approach to health and healing. She supports individuals navigating stress, anxiety, chronic conditions, and life transitions through personalized, trauma-informed yoga therapy sessions that combine movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and energy work. With a strong emphasis on nervous system regulation and mental well-being, Bernadette’s work invites clients to reconnect with their bodies, build resilience, and feel more at ease in daily life. Her approach is gentle yet empowering—rooted in compassion, science, and the belief that healing happens when we feel safe, seen, and supported.

Bernadette was born and raised in Cebu, Philippines, a few kilometers from Lapu Lapu City on Mactan Island. She has called Vancouver home for almost a decade. She developed and led the first Paglaum trauma-informed therapeutic yoga session in the immediate aftermath of the Lapu Lapu festival tragedy.
